About Paws for Reading

  • Participants have a one-on-one reading session with a certified therapy dog (handler will be present at all times).
  • Each time a participant reads to a therapy dog, they earn a sticker for their bookmark.
  • When a participant's bookmark is full of stickers, he/she may choose a book of their very own!
  • Paws for Reading occurs every 3rd Saturday of the month from 1pm - 2:30pm

About Our Furry Friends

We have teamed up with the Southwest Canine Corps of Volunteers (SCCV) to bring this wonderful program to the young readers of our community and couldn't have asked for a better partnership!
The SCCV is made up of some very well-trained and caring volunteers who frequent hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing facilities, and public libraries mostly throughout the Albuquerque area. The mission of this insured not-for-profit organization is to selflessly offer comfort, compassion, affection, and educational opportunities.  Therefore, public libraries and therapy dogs are a perfect match!

Why Read to a Therapy Dog?

Oftentimes, young or beginning readers are unsure of their abilities especially if they struggle with reading.  The calming affect therapy dogs have on one's fears, anxieties, and  even ailments is evident. Our hope, through Paws For Reading, is to provide a relaxing and open-minded environment in which children can develop literacy, social, and communication skills and most importantly, foster a love of reading.
